KAWARTHA LAKES, Ont. -- August 30, 2010 -- Barry Devolin, Member of Parliament for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, on behalf of Canada's Environment Minister, the Honourable Jim Prentice, today announced funding from the EcoAction Community Funding Program for a new environmental project near Bobcaygeon, in Ontario. In total, $64,178 in federal funding will support local action to reduce pollution, improve air and water quality, and protect wildlife and natural habitat.
"As part of the International Year of Biodiversity, the EcoAction Community Funding Program is supporting the enhancement of Pigeon Lake and its surrounding area," said MP Barry Devolin. "This project is a demonstration of real action that is helping restore our natural resources. Community engagement and collaboration with other partners towards a common goal is what makes the EcoAction Program successful."
"This government is committed to addressing the environmental priorities of Canadians," said Minister Jim Prentice. "We are proud to support community groups across the country willing to take concrete action through on-the-ground environmental projects that will achieve a more sustainable Canada. Your actions, large or small, will help to protect the abundance and variety of life that is part of our natural heritage."
This project, which will be implemented by the Gamiing Nature Centre, will address the need for water quality and habitat improvement, as well as biodiversity sustainability along the shores of Pigeon Lake and area waterways in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Educational resources will be distributed to residents in and around the area, and approximately 18 shoreline restoration projects will be undertaken with 3,300 shrubs and wildflowers being planted to repair damaged habitats.
"We are thrilled to receive this funding which will enable us to work with lakeshore owners in naturalizing and rehabilitating the shorelines along Pigeon Lake," said Mieke Schipper, volunteer Executive Director with the Gamiing Nature Centre. "This program will create stewardship opportunities for local landowners and provide many benefits to wildlife and the health of the waterways."
The EcoAction Community Funding Program is a Government of Canada initiative that supports projects that rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment, and builds the capacity of communities and individuals in support of a more sustainable Canada. The project announced today will assist locally-based, non-profit organizations in initiating actions that result in cleaner air, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner water, and the protection of nature at the local community level.
